Ten classroom teachers are retiring from positions in the University City public schools this year. Those at the University City Senior high school are: Miss Martha R. Barnidge, social studies; Miss Leliaetta Bruns, mathematics; Mrs. Augusta Gottlieb, English; Mr. Leo E. McKinney, chemistry; and Mr. Clarence A. Muhl, physical education. Mr. Muhl had announced his retirement last month.
At Hanley junior high school Mr. Walter W. Jones, industrial arts, and Miss Louise Nagel, physical education, are retiring. Mr. Jones, however, will co-tinue as director of the University City Adult Evening School.
Elementary teachers who are retiring are: Miss Sarah T. Halgren, fifth grade, Nathaniel Hawthorne school; Mrs. Marie P. Hull, kindergarten, McKnight school; and Miss Sadae Landau, primary two, Delmar-Harvard school.
“It is master teachers such as these who have brought to University City its outstanding reputation among school systems across the country,” Dr. Martin B. Garrison, superintendent of schools, said. “Our community owes its sincere thanks to each of these fine teachers. We are indeed proud that our schools have such a fine record of retaining such dedicated teachers for so many years.”
Miss Barnidge has been with the University City school system since 1929, teaching history at the Senior high school. Miss Bruns has taught mathematics at the University City Senior high school since 1922. Mrs. Gottlieb has taught English at the Senior high school since 1946. Mr. McKinney has been with the University City school system since 1927, first at the Junior high school, and since 1945 at the Senior high school. Mr. Muhl has taught physical education at the Senior high school since 1928. Mr. Jones has been with the school system since 1930, teaching industrial.
Among retiring faculty members honored at a tea given by the Community Teachers Association of University City on May 5 were: Miss Louise Nagel, Mr. Walter Jones, Mrs. Marie Price Hull, Dr. Fred E. Brooks, Miss Martha Barnidge, Miss Leliaetta Bruns, and Mr. Clarence Muhl. arts in the Junior high school, the Ward junior high school, and moving to the Hanley junior high school in 1948.
Miss Nagel has taught physical education in the school system since 1929, at the Junior high school, the Ward junior high school, and moving to the Hanley junior high school in 1948. Miss Halgren has been teaching at the Nathaniel Hawthorne school since 1949, first in the sixth grade and then in 1954 changing to the fifth grade. Mrs. Hull has been a kindergarten teacher for the school system since 1952, at the Daniel Boone, Flynn Park, Canterbury, and Delmar-Harvard schools, and since 1961 at the McKnight school. Miss Landau has been with the school system since 1930, teaching primary two at the Delmar-Harvard school.
